The Luck of the Irish!

The Irish culture has always had a bit of luck associated with it. Although as a trained non-verbal communication buff I see it another way…

Irish often possess these power traits:

Optimism - Most born and bred Irish people have a very optimistic outlook on life.  The glass is half-full or utterly full as they see it. It isn’t that they don’t have problems in life - they just choose to see them like that - just challenges - not permanent states.  Not surprising, a recent study named the country the happiest in the EU [1].

Amazing Storytellers - A good story with the right non-verbal communication can open up a crowd. Do you know how to weave a good tale? The words are only half the story, the other key component is the right expressions - the non-verbal communication elements.

Eye Contact - have you ever been in an audience and feel like the speaker was talking just to you?  This is a fantastic non-verbal talent of making eye contact in a very dedicated way. Irish storytellers are incredible at making eye contact and engaging the audience.

"All the world's a stage, and most of us are desperately unrehearsed,” once said Sean O’Casey[2]. The Irish people take their time during a story, unfolding the story inch by inch, watching whoever is their audience (one or many) for the right cue. Should I keep going or should I offer an insightful tip? A good storyteller makes it appear as if they are unrehearsed and natural. Communication is a two-way street. Any good conversation has at least two people fully engaged. The lucky know this and practice it. They are just as interested in what you have to say, as they are in what they are saying. And it shows!
